I snap back.

Her face first. My bride. The horror in it fresh, like she has just watched a stranger climb out of the man she married.

She is not wrong.

The children next. Wide eyes, no expression yet. Only recording. Whatever just happened is going into them frame by frame, to be developed years from now in a dark room of their own. I know this. I am the negative someone exposed in a room like this once.

Then my mother. Her eyes are not horrified. They are wearing. She takes it in the way you take in weather you forecasted. She birthed the thing standing in this room. She has been waiting for it to stand.

The dust settles.

This is not the wedding. This is every room that ever pushed me one inch past the line. Every table where a man read my patience as a floor. The Sun does not ask permission. He arrives.

Anarchy. Mine. Steady. Ready.

And then he kneels.

Down to the wide unblinking eyes, dust still hanging in the light, and he sings to them. Not to frighten. To tell them the only thing that matters. That this is not the thing that breaks them. That when I am gone from the room they should carry on, do their thing, feel no pain, because everything he did, he did so they would never have to.

I am smiling at them.

I need them to smile back. I need them to know the monster came out for them.

II
The Island
why I have always been alone

The dust clears and I am standing in the middle of it alone.

Not abandoned. Alone the way a lighthouse is alone.

Everywhere I go, men speak of their partners the way they speak of their hands. My guy. The one I build with. Casual, the way the rich are casual about money they never had to count. I nod. I have never once been able to say it back.

I told myself why. People are slow. They make excuses. They dodge ownership. They run the blame game the second the weather turns. When I show them the standard, the standard offends them, like a light switched on in a room they were sleeping in.

All of it true. I have twelve years of receipts.

So I built an island, and I told everyone it was because the mainland was full of slow men and broken standards. On the island the standard never has to argue. On the island no one lets me down.

That was the story. It held for years.

The room is empty now. There is no one left to tell it to.

So here is the other half. No one lets me down on the island because no one was ever let onto it. I never built a gate. I built a shore that looked like a gate, and I have been calling my solitude a fortress because the truer word for it is harder to say.

And the loneliness everyone keeps trying to rescue me from. I go back to it the way other men go home.

III
The Open Hand
what an open hand teaches a certain kind of person

But an island still trades. You let the ships dock.

So they come. And the gate I swore I never built, I open it. Every time. I cannot seem to stop.

A man sits at the table and I do the thing I always do. I make room. If you want it for yourself, truly want it, I will bend the whole structure to fit your wanting. Take the better split. I will carry the risk you are afraid of. I turn my hand over on the table, palm up. Build with me. I will make sure you are taken care of the whole way.

A palm laid open does not move a certain kind of person to take it.

It tells them it can be emptied.

They grow to fill the room I made, then grow past it. They price what they bring at a number that has nothing to do with what they bring. They sit at a table set with four chairs and bargain as though theirs is the only one. And when I hold the line, when I say this is the deal, the facts are not for negotiation, I become the villain of a story I was trying to make us both rich inside of.

The man across the table worked for me twelve years. I knew his hand was in the drawer. I let it stay, because closing the drawer meant closing my own supply. So I paid him every month, in product and in dignity, for the privilege of being robbed slowly enough to survive.

Another reached for the team while my back was on the floor.

Another met the room I cleared for him with his teeth, pushing into the clearing as though it insulted him. He came back months later, soft, maybe I came at it wrong, once the saying of it cost him nothing.

I used to call this a verdict on them.

It is not. Hurt people reach for the nearest thing that will make someone else carry the weight. They were not stealing from me. They were trying to make me feel the size of a wound I never meant to open.

I was doing me. Me, at full size, hand open, standard lit. It opens wounds in people.

I still do not know what to do with that.

IV
The Ones Who Stayed
the deepest cuts

The takers I can file.

It is the ones who stayed I cannot.

The deepest cuts never came from the people who left with my product. They came from the ones who loved me. Who saw the whole thing, the man and the Sun both, and stayed. And then spent the loving trying to keep one half and quietly put down the other.

There is a way a person looks at you when they love you and war with you in the same breath. Love wearing the face of grievance. They do not want to leave. They want me dimmed. The Sun behind cloud, where it will not frighten the neighbors. A small thing, they think, to ask of love.

And I watch what the asking costs them. The half they are loving me hard enough to hold down. I watch it chip away at them. Not the Sun destroying them. The holding of it. The daily invisible labor of loving a man and refusing one of him, which never ends and never wins.

Under all of it. Under every turned back, every love that came with a condition stitched to it, there is a sound.

A boy.

Screaming one word.

Love me.

That is the engine. Under the maison, the mirror, the fathers, the sons, this room. A boy who wants to be loved exactly as he is.

And he already knows. Even screaming, he knows. The thing he begs them to love is the thing that burns them when they come close enough to try.

He is asking to be loved for the exact thing that makes him impossible to hold.

I will not close that for you. I cannot close it for myself.

Have you stood in that fire too.

V
The Regent
the one who loved both halves
The Sound · Movement V
2 Bad · HIStory · Michael Jackson
Press play before you read. The beast, claimed.

There was one.

One who loved both halves and tried to kill neither.

His name was Prince.

He was a dog, and you are adjusting your expectations downward, and you should not. That dog did the thing no person in my life has managed. He sat in the room with both of me and never once asked the Sun to set so he could love the man. To him I was never two. I was his. Entire. Both. Always.

Twenty years he held the throne, while I was still too young in the soul to sit in it. When the room caught fire he lay at the foot of it, steady, as though fire were only weather and he had a coat for it.

Then I killed him.

Not the beast. If the Sun had done it I could carry it. It was the love.

I flew him around the world to keep him near while I scorched the earth chasing a score I was settling with my own insecurities. I could not bear the distance, so I closed it. Again and again. Carrying him into every fire I walked into, because near me was the only way I knew how to love him.

The nearness is what wore him through.

My hand at the end. Mine. Holding him while they put him to sleep, because the other way was watching him suffer the cost of a love that would not leave him alone. He looked at me the whole time. He did not look away. He loved me until his eyes closed, and I was the thing that closed them.

Every other wound in these letters I can file under one defense. I was doing me, and me being me hurts people, and I never meant it.

That defense does not work on a dog who died of being loved.

And here is what he left me. The thing I have carried twenty years and never set on a page until now. If love itself is the fire, if the nearer I hold a thing the surer I am to wear it through, then the beast was never the danger. The holding was. I had the geometry backwards my whole life.

You do not love a thing by pulling it into the fire.

You love it by learning the exact distance at which it can stay warm and still live.

He died teaching me that. The Regent. He held the throne until I was old enough in the soul to take it, and the lesson cost him his life, and I would give back every room I have ever built to have learned it some cheaper way.

VI
The Lineage
the keepers of the flame

I spent the lesson wrong at first. I thought it asked a question. Who can love both halves of a man. I hunted one person who could hold all of me at once, and I read each failure as proof that the thing inside me was simply too much.

The answer was never one person.

It was a line. He was only the first keeper I had eyes to see.

Before him, the Mother. She birthed them. Not him. Them. Both sons came out of her together, and she knew it in the delivery room the way she knew it at the altar. She did not raise a good boy who later went wrong. She raised two, on purpose, and loved them before either had done a thing to deserve it. She loves me still from the one distance that has never burned a soul. The distance of a woman who prays for a son she has no intention of trying to change. She found the geometry before any of us. She held the flame by never once reaching to touch it.

After him, the Sun. The one I had been calling the curse, who was the whole time the builder. Everything around you, the entire burning kingdom of it, he raised. He raised it for the one I was born to be. The beast does not rule. He builds the house so the Mansa can serve from it. He scorches the ground so the throne has somewhere to stand.

And a king who builds his own house is still only half a court.

So. The Queen. Not the woman who flinched at the altar. The one who stayed past the flinch, who took the full measure of the Sun and did not run, who holds the crown steady on a head that shakes beneath its weight. Every Mansa in every age had one. The histories remember only the King. No throne was ever held by a man alone.

The answer was never one person. It was a line.

The Mother who birthed both. The Regent who held the sons. The Sun who built the house. The Mansa who serves from it. The Queen who holds the King.

I am not unlovable.

I am a man who required a lineage, and was given one. Keeper by keeper. Each arriving the moment I was ready to be held by them.

The Lovers of the Sun
the line opens its last rank

And the line is not closed.

I learned, at the cost of the one who taught me, that a fire fed by too few will wear those few through. I will not do to the living what I did to the dog. I will not pull a small circle so close to the flame to keep me burning that the flame consumes them. The Regent died because I asked one creature to carry a warmth that needed a kingdom to hold it.

So the line opens. One last rank. The widest one.

The Lovers of the Sun.

A star does not radiate on its own. It needs hydrogen. It takes what it is given and turns it into the only thing it knows how to make, which is light, and the light falls on everyone in range, whether they helped feed the fire or not. That is the arrangement I am offering. Not patronage of a man. Participation in a combustion. You help the Sun burn. The Sun gives back the only thing it has ever made. Heat enough for a whole house to stand inside.

I am a man who makes things. Eleven years of it. The fragrances, the house, these letters you have opened at seventy out of a hundred while the world opens nothing. I have shown you, across four chapters, exactly what the fire makes when it is given somewhere to go.

And I have never once pretended it runs on nothing.

No movement that ever changed anything ran on the genius alone. The ceiling got painted because someone kept the painter fed. The histories carve the name into the work and forget the hands that kept the maker alive long enough to finish it, and that forgetting is a lie I have decided not to repeat. A star fed goes on giving light. A star starved goes dark, and takes the warmth of the whole house with it.

So I am giving you the way in. Not a thing to drop coins into. A place at the fire while it is still being built. A hand on the warmth that keeps it climbing. The chance to be one of the ones the next chapter exists because of.

I will not soften what it costs to stand close. The lineage is the list of everyone who came near this fire, and one of them I carried to the end in my own two hands. But I have the geometry now. This is the close that does not burn. Near enough to help the flame, far enough to live. The distance the dog bought me with his life.

Come and help the Sun burn.

The door is open. It is warm at the right distance.

Stand in it.

VII
Choose Me Back
the charge

The boy has been screaming one word this whole time.

Love me.

But somewhere across the lineage the scream changed, and I only hear it now, writing the last of this. It is not the word it was in the schoolyard. The boy is no longer begging a crowd that turned its back. He is no longer asking to be let in.

He is asking to be joined.

That is the whole difference, and it took four chapters and a lineage of keepers for me to hear it. Love me used to mean do not leave me alone with this. Now it means come and build it with me. The same two words. The fire underneath them changed completely.

Maybe I am only ever loved for what I bring to the table.

Maybe.

Or maybe I have poured out so completely, my whole life, that I have never once let a soul love me with my hands empty. So I do not actually know which is true. I built the table too well to ever find out. That is the one wound in all of this whose ending I cannot give you, because I am still standing inside it.

But I have stopped trying to kill the Sun to earn the answer.

I chose you when I wrote to you instead of advertising at you. When I gave you the truth instead of the pitch. Four letters, each of them the same two words underneath, asked the only way I have ever known how to ask.

Half a man.
Half a beast.

You are enough.
