Chapter I

The Mirror

You Are Enough
A manifesto. To be read aloud.
I
The Frame

This chapter is anchored by Thriller. A reimagined, mirrored masterpiece of expression, founded in the synchronized glitch we all experience life in. Performed as a symphonic orchestra that travels the arc to a hero's conclusion, where you take a step closer to becoming.

The music references intertwined are the way I create and perceive. They give you off-ramps to experience a colorful trip, because this is a road trip to greatness. I've decided the destination. I've set the map. And I have taken the responsibility as the driver to get us there.

I hope you enjoy the ride. Keep an open mind and explore it with me, as I transmute the lead to gold.

The Frame
I have decided the destination.
II
The Summons

Bullied as a kid.

Beaten by a father.

Berated by a partner.

Belittled by life.

What do they all have in common?

A voice, that proceeds the destruction of self.

This isn't a cry of victimhood. It's the revelation of the source that forges. Either it consumes you. Or out the flames, rises a beast.

This is the story of the choice of the latter.

If this explains you, you have one choice. One once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to become everything you ever wanted. One moment that you can lose yourself to and change the world.

Do not miss your chance to blow.

III
The Diagnosis
(that. that's what it does to the body.)

They say it's just words.

(just words.)

But the words hum like background noise. The beep you stop hearing. You keep trying to jump above them, but they hold you down. The glass lid you keep hitting your head on conditions you, till you forget the lid is there. It becomes your limit.

Then the words start to rip up your superhero cape. The thing that once made you believe you could fly, self-confidence, starts to hold you down. Like this setup was for a punch — line on — duck(t) tape.

Nicki Minaj·OnlyDaily Remix
(setup. exactly.)

This is how the limitation gets installed. Not as a blow. As a frequency. A boy is not told once that he is not enough, he is told a thousand times in a thousand small frequencies, by the people closest enough to administer the dose, until the dose becomes the air.

He stops registering it the way the city stops registering its traffic. The hum becomes the soundtrack of his life.

(slow.)

And underneath the soundtrack, slowly, his behavior begins to change. He begins to react to the world instead of learning to act from his own agency. His sovereignty slips. He shies away from his size. He performs a smaller version of himself because the smaller version is the one the room rewards.

(small. smaller. smaller still.)

He dies a slow death, living less than what he is, because somewhere a long time ago the line of men who were supposed to show him how to stand stopped standing.

(and we just absorb it.)

This is not one boy. This is not one generation. This is a season.

IV
The Season

After The Fourth Turning, William Strauss & Neil Howe, 1997.

There is a season for everything. Bad times make strong men. Strong men make good times. Good times make weak men. Weak men make bad times. We are in the fourth movement.

When the masculine abdicates, the feminine is forced to take up arms she was never meant to carry. She becomes the leader, the protector, the frame of herself, not by choice, but by necessity. The result is exhausted women. The result is absent men. The result is a generation that mistakes the symptom for the cause.

The fault is not hers. The fault is the man who did not stand.

The point is simple. Leaders lead. Leadership has weakened. Direction has been lost.

Life is a map. If you do not set the destination, you never arrive. If you do set it, you bear the weight of arriving. Most men have not forgotten how to make decisions, most men were never shown a man who made his. The system has grown to eviscerate any man who dares step back into his masculine, and to reward the little human who stays small.

(small. smaller. smaller still.)
V
The Mechanism

This is the mechanism.

The voice is not loud. The voice is constant. The damage is not done in a single blow. The damage is done by repetition so steady it becomes mistaken for reality.

The boy grows into the man who carries a lid he cannot see. He stops jumping at his full height, not because he is incapable, but because the lid taught him not to.

(see that?)

By the time the lid is lifted, the boy inside him has forgotten he could ever jump higher than this. He has become the size of the room he was kept in.

VI
The Cut

This is the day I am cutting the power. I take the cutter into my own hands and cut the whole B*tch down. This is my story. Let me see if I can kill your amnesia by the time you leave. It's time to send a reminder.

Men lie. Women lie. Numbers don't.

Jay-Z·ReminderDaily Remix
VII
The Signing

I have been writing every day for over twenty years. I wrote to set my own brain. I wrote to keep myself sane. I wrote to think. But I never gave the writing permission to gain a voice. I muted it. I let it serve me privately and I refused to let it serve anyone else, because the hum had taught me that the version of me that took up public space was not the version the room wanted.

This is the permission slip I have been writing in my own hand for thirty years and refusing to sign.

I am signing it now.

The ink is wet.

I had been waiting for permission. I did not know I was waiting. I thought I was building, working, providing, surviving, founding, fixing. I was. But underneath all of it I was also waiting for someone, a father, a partner, a crowd, a result, to issue the slip I had been writing the conditions of in my own hand.

(my own hand. all this time.)

The day I signed it, the cause found me. In the same week I decided to stop apologizing for the size I take up, the voices that had taught me to be smaller came back in concentrated form to test whether the permission was real.

VIII
The Mirror

Child. Little man. Boy. Not ready. Not enough. Not a man.

(I heard you.)

I had been hearing those words for a lifetime in different rooms. The hum had become my soundtrack. The day I named it the hum, the hum announced itself. But I've broken the records. And I've decided to start with the man in the mirror.

Michael Jackson·Man in the MirrorDaily Remix
(start there. always start there.)

So I am writing this down.

I am writing this down for the boy I was who did not have the words.

(little man. I see you.)

I am writing this down for the men around the world reading this with the hum in the background of their own room, who know exactly which voices I am describing because the voices in their head right now are using the same vocabulary.

I am writing this down for the people who have loved a man through his hum and could not understand why he kept disappearing into a frequency only he could hear.

I am writing this down because the erosion of a man's interior architecture, his ability to stand at his own size without needing to dominate, withdraw, or apologize for the room he takes up, has been treated as a punchline. As a hashtag. As a meme. As a culture war.

It is none of those things. It is strategic. It is systemic. The world has a name for it, demasculinization, and the word has been so co-opted by the people performing the wound that the diagnosis has lost its weight.

Call it what it is.

(say it.)

This is not toxic masculinity. Toxic masculinity is what happens to a man with a hum he refuses to face. It is the hum overflowing. It is what a man becomes when he has been told he is not enough for long enough that he begins to perform a parody of enough, louder, harder, crueler, smaller, to drown the hum out.

(not that. never that.)

This is the opposite of that.

This is a man, sitting at his mirror, listening to the hum, naming the hum, and applying the answer to himself as ritual instead of as armor. This is the reclamation of presence, not the manufacture of dominance. This is the work of becoming whole, not the performance of being hard.

(whole. not hard. whole.)

And I am not doing this through the platforms men typically use to monetize their pain. I am not doing this through outrage clips, follower counts, or the economy that has turned the male wound into a content business. I am doing this through a maison. Through scent. Through ritual. Through craft. Through the most patient and most luxurious channel a man can reach for, because the wound deserves to be answered with care, not with content.

IX
The Broadcast

If you are a man reading this and the hum is in your room right now, hear me:

You are not late. You are not behind. You are not less than. You are not the version of yourself your worst day named you. The voices were never measuring you. They were defending themselves against your potential size.

The lid was never the ceiling. The lid was the test.

(setup. just like she said.)

You can put them down. You can wear something else in their place. You are allowed.

· · ·

If you have loved a man through his hum, hear me:

You are not the enemy of this work. The voices come from everywhere. The voices come from inside. The voices come from fathers, peers, cultures, screens, mirrors, and yes, sometimes from people who were also fighting their own hums. The work is not against you. The work is for him, which means it is also for you, because a man who has answered his hum is a different kind of partner, father, son, friend, and citizen.

Give a woman a house, she makes it a home. Women are the multipliers on earth of all things. The ones who convert DNA to life. The ones who bring abundance and prosperity to all things. The life force behind every man. The ones who make us hum.

naaah naaaah nah naaah!

Wait till I get my confidence right...

naaah naaaah naaah nah!

Then they can't tell us nothing. RIGHT!? Excuse me! Are you saying something!!?? We all know, you can't tell me nothing!

Kanye West·Can't Tell Me NothingDaily Remix
(right. right. right.)
· · ·

If you are a builder, an artist, a maker reading this, hear me:

The territory is open. The frequency has been ceded to the loudest and smallest voices in the room. The man at his mirror has no broadcast. He has memes. He has slogans. He has merchants who sell him his own wound back at a markup.

There is a continent of room for the work to be done with craft. There is a continent of room for the work to be done with care. The maison is one answer. There are others. Build them.

The Transmutation

Bullied as a kid. Beaten by a father. Berated by a partner. Belittled by life. We break the barriers that bond us.

Lil Wayne·Barry BondsDaily Remix

And we step into the soundtrack of our lives that beats. We're the hottest under the sun. So it's time to be you. You x3.

Lil Wayne·I'm MeDaily Remix

And turn those limitations:

A voice.

A frequency.

A lid.

Into the sound that screams I'M BAD! And you know it.

And a man who has finally decided to lift it.
